Through the Breach

Journal of Dr. Smith (entry 9)

Harold led us through the mine. The nephlim we had seen on the side of the mountain following us in. Their glowing hair not enough to light our way. We reached an area that appeared to have some sort of opening. As we pondered how to open the blocked passageway, one of the nephlim started to make its way forward. It pushed past all of us and touched the carved arch. Once he did runes glowed and the wall vanished. He went inside; the others began to motion for us to enter as well. Once we all were inside the creatures took up a circular formation around the room. There were strange runes on the walls, from floor to ceiling.
Then the one who opened up the door began to speak. Not some foul demon language but English. That was a surprise. It told us that the door had been locked and it had opened it. It also began to tell us what the King Nephlim was looking for, why they were there. It seems that their king, King Barbaros was the only one of the neverborne who could use magic. Even though the neverbore themselves are magic. And that King Barbaros was looking for a book; this book was the only way to stop the tyrants from destroying everything.
After speaking for a while we were informed that King Barbaros himself was coming and if we wanted to live we should tell him where the book is. Now I’m no stranger to danger but that book was our leverage. And if the king wanted it he could ask for it. Lo Kway made some remark about having the book, and wanting compensation for Mister Ming. These things will kill us as soon as look at us. I tried to convey that message to the creature.
A loud roar came from the entrance of the cave and the little one said the King has arrived. Yep we had seen him before; he was one that broke out of the soulstone wall a little while back. Lo Kway did some form of bow and handed the king the book.
Once King Barbaros had the book he waved him large taloned hand and another passage opened before him. The little creatures following close behind him as he left. We followed at a slightly slower pace to observe what was going to happen.
King Barbaros entered another room and began to chant in the neverborne language. It’s a strange but enjoyable sound. It seems they can make a wide variety of sounds and match them together in a pleasing way. Anyway all the little creatures except the one that spoke to us died. Then King Barbaros began heading father into the mine. Harold informed us that we were in the area where he broke free. We heard miners in the distance. I as well as a few others rushed past King Barbaros to warn them to flee. Once King Barbaros was in the area where he was released he began to rebuild the wall. But parts were missing. It seems that two of our group had taken some of the pieces. The wagon driver denied having any but eventually he gave up his piece.
King Barbaros grabbed Lo Kway, light filling his head. Lo Kway started to speak the strange language. The book opened, miners screamed and died. I nearly gave into the feeling of having my soul torn free but was able to resist. And then it was over, King Barbaros was back in the wall, the book was closed. The little creature picked upon the book and left. I was too busy checking on Lo Kway and the miners to worry about that. We headed back to the surface after setting up charges to collapse that part of the mine. We found five miners alive. After using some magic I was able to convince the foreman not to open that area. It seems that quite f few of us have magical ability, as we all pitched in to place a spell over the area as to discourage anyone from tampering with the sealed part.

We headed back to the city, myself and Harold heading to the steamfitters union to inform Mister Ramos about what had happened. We were seen by someone else who took down what happened, thanked us for our help and left. Damn Lackeys, hopefully this one will be useful and let Ramos know what happened. With that done its time for dinner.

Fredo's Diary: In the Mine

The miner led us through the mine. Little potato-like men with glowing hair started to follow us. We reached an intersection, and one of them pushed each of us to the side and worked some sort of magick to open up a room. The other potato men got frantic about us getting into the room, so we went in. They followed us and sat along the walls, reading the runes. The head potato man told the Chinaman that the runes on the walls were about the kings. He said that one Nephilim king could work magical and could read the Chinaman’s book. His name is Barbaros.

The lead potato man insisted that the book must be presented when Barbaros arrived. The Chinaman asked for assurances, since his boss wanted something in return. The potato man said getting to continue to exist was our reward.

Barbaros arrived and the Chinaman presented the book. Barbaros headed out of the room and down the hallway. He led us to where he had been broken free last time we were in these mines. He examined the shattered stone and determined that some pieces were missing. The head potato man told us that all the stones must be there to complete the ritual, or else the ritual would be incomplete and the barrier keeping the bad creatures out would be broken. I offered one of my soulstones, but he said it had to be the pieces from this wall, which was once a solid wall.

Finally the head potato man said that Barbaros could fix the wall, but he would need one of us to do the ritual. He chose the Chinaman and grabbed his head. The Chinaman began speaking in tongues, and there were great beams of light moving to and fro. The miners fell dead. Finally Barbaros was sealed behind the stone, and the Chinaman collapsed on the ground. The head potato man took the book and walked down the corridor.

We searched the mine for survivors and found none. We started dragging about 60 bodies out. We came across the mining foreman, and he insisted that we go back in so he could investigate on his own. He saw the dynamite the miner had set up to blow this part of the mine closed, and he said we couldn’t do that. While he was looking around, it occurred to us that we could use the soulstones there to permanently discourage people from mining there. The doctor said he could make it so people thought they smelled gas when they reached here and wouldn’t mine. I helped him harness the soulstones.

The ride back into town was uneventful. It was already 4 p.m. so I headed directly to The Star. There was a show that night, so I changed into my costume and went out front to prestidigitate. I looked for Ramos at the show, but he was not there.

Feer So Shtupid

Hele I go to Guird riblaly with Fledo and get lefused entlance, onry to find Ming have book on Nephirim ranguage arr the time. [Laborious translation of continuing remarks follows:] I was very surprised to have Ming loan me the book. I no read so good, but I keep going over and over the pages until I find some of the characters I remember from the wall in my vision. I am very excited—hoping I can solve the mystery of the book or, at least, find something that will placate King Nephilim so that he values the book itself more than soulstones or our tasty little lives.

Once I had the book, I realized that I needed to “get the band back together.” We needed to go to the mine in hopes that we could decipher enough of the Nephilim writing to be able to either open the book (After all, the crazy lady said I WOULD open the book) or gain some bargaining power with King Nephilim. I sure wish crazy lady would help me some here, but I guess that’s not to be.

We took that crazy morgue driver’s wagon and headed for the mine. I think the “rest of the band” is a little disappointed that we haven’t come up with any major treasure yet. Hey! I’m poorer than they are and I feel “called” to do this thing. If what that crazy lady said was true, not placing this book in King Nephilim’s hands may spell the end of Malifaux and maybe whatever is beyond the Void.

And as we neared the mine, the rifleman noticed a bunch of carrot-topped beings. It’s a bunch of smaller Nephilim—and they’re searching for something. They’re probably searching for the mine, but they are being singularly ineffective. I found that we needed to look beyond the rock fall and the only one of us with any mining experience managed to find the hidden entrance. The little Nephilim didn’t seem to take any notice. That’s good, but I have a feeling they may be able to zero in on us as we reach the right chamber in the mine. The question is…will we have enough information to accomplish anything when we get there?

Journal of Dr. Smith (entry 8)

It’s midday before we get back to the city proper from the slums. We each head our separate ways. I am guessing the Lo Kway will need us for something. So I decide to gather the others. Heading into miss pattis to grab a quick lunch i run into Fredo and the wagon driver, as well as Lo Kway enter shortly after we begin talking. After a few quick words they agree to come with to meet the nephlim king. We need to make a few stops first, First up we need to stop by the star to let hem know that he will need a few days off. Once there he has no trouble getting the next few days off of work.

Next up we go looking for the miner. We run into him after leaving the star. On our way to the post office we see the rifleman riding hard for the gates. Luck is on our side as he hears me calling him and stops. It seems the battle at the honey pot scared him terribly. He has decided to head to the Ortegas compound to inform them of the neverborne presence in the honey pot. I’m still not convinced that they were neverborne , as I saw no evidence of it. The rifleman is most insistent that they were neverborne, after a few questions I realize he has not informed the guild. You would think that would be the first place to go. Since they are in the city. At this time it is getting late do we agree to head out at first light to see the king. I bring up a point that the book and writing are in mister Ming’s mine and that we should head there first. I bring this up for two reasons. First, the mine might have some soulstones we could use, and second. Meeting the king of the nephlim is not a smart idea. Who knows what he will do, if we must meet him we will but i prefer to explore all other options first.

We gather the nessary supplies for the trip to the mine and then head our separate ways until first light.

Once back in my room I begin to carve my first puppet. A little 6 inch tall man, with a hook for one hand and a knife for the other. I stich his clothing. A little black trenchcoat interwoven with small pieces of wood for protection, next is a little black hat. With that all done I close the little door over his chest and close the coat. I must find a small soulstone to use as a heart to keep him alive longer then my spells.

Once done I place him in my doctors bag and get some sleep. First light is only a few hours away.

We gather and head out, making good time. We camp the first night and have an uneventful sleep. On the second day we see the mountain range ahead. The rifleman call a halt and informs us he sees some of the smaller neverborne crawling over the mountain slope. It appears they are looking for something.

They offer no problems as we approach, Lo Kway finds some hidden writing on Ming’s map. It offers a clue on how to get in. We enter the crevice, the miner heading first.

Fredo's Diary: Another Adventure

I went to have some late breakfast at Miss Patti’s, and the doctor approached me there. He asked if I wanted to go on a little adventure. I said as long as I’d be back before sundown. He said he couldn’t guarantee that. He said they’d been attacked by an inky blackness and were going to try to kill the other one. I said I’d have to ask Miss Colette.

We walked over to The Star. The girls said Miss Colette and Miss Angelica were off on a run, and Miss Cassandra was busy keeping the books. I said I wanted to take the night off. They said that wasn’t a problem as there wasn’t going to be a show. Usually everyone works on something on a no-show night, but it wouldn’t be a big deal for me to take off. I told them I was goin’ on an adventure and hoped to be back the next night.

By the time the doctor and I rounded up the others, it was late in the day, so we decided to set off the next morning. I went over to The Star and helped the girls clean.

I accidentally dropped my soulstone down the drain, into the sewer. I found a manhole cover and went into the sewer to find it. I managed to get myself covered in sewage rescuing the soulstone. I climbed out of another manhole cover. The Guild Guard asked what happened and then sent on my way. At the Road and Pony, the innkeeper had his sons douse me in water while I stood in the gutter, so the sewage would go back in the sewers. I changed my clothes and went to go check in at The Star and buy some soap. I stopped and talked to the Chinaman about accompanying me into the Guild Enclave in the morning. I returned to the Road and Pony and cleaned everything until my soap was used up.

In the morning, the Chinaman and I went to the Guild Enclave to replace my Guild registration as a magic user. The Guild admonished me for getting my registration papers covered in sewage. The Chinaman was not able to get into the library. We found that it was highly guarded, and a man could not get inside unless a library employee invited and accompanied him.

The group met up, got supplies, and set off on the adventure. Evidently we were going to a mine owned by the Chinaman’s boss. Eventually we encountered some little, goblin-sized Nephilim. They let us pass but kept an eye on us.

We arrived at the mountain but weren’t sure how to get into the mine. The miner found a small crack where we could shimmy into the mountain.

Ladies, Gambling and Monsters?

The day started off as normal. I went for my usual breakfast at miss patti’s. and then back to my room. Since I have finally acquired the knowledge of making puppets i was excited to put that knowledge to use. Then Lo Kway knocked on my door. After the trip to the swamps I have come to the realization that we ( all the ones I shared a vision with upon arriving in Malifaux ) are tied together through fate. So when I saw him there at my door I knew it was going to be a strange day.

Lo Kway informed me we were heading to the slums to speak with the man that had owned mister Ming’s mine before mister Ming. Our first stop was the post office to gather the rifleman. Once there we were informed that he was out on a run and was expected back later that day. As for the other ones of our ragtag group I had not seen them in over a day so looking for them was not wise. Time better spent elsewhere. Lo Kway brought up the wagon driver, a strange man to be sure but somewhat trustworthy. I had heard him mention working with Doctor McMorning. So our next stop was the guild hall. After arranging for a one hour pass we headed to retrieve our comrade. Sure enough he was with the good doctor, he kept telling us we needed to speak with the doctor before we could leave. After a few moments of him banging on a door the doctor came out very agitated. Demanding why we had bothered him. I being a doctor myself know his frustration. A few well placed words and we were on our way. On our way back out of the enclave we ran into the rifleman. He was trying to gain entrance to deliver a package to the governor. Like tat was going to happen. Even my short time here has allowed me the forethought that no one sees the governor unless the governor wants to see you first. After a few moments, quick explanations and a run to the office Dan had delivered his package. And we began to explain what it was we were going to do and where.

Now I’m one for making money but he was unwilling to accompany us unless Lo Kway paid him. I found this outrageous, after all we have been through in this place, all the ways fate continues to pull us together, he wants money. I explained to him there would be no money, we are meant to do this. After all the free care I had given to him and the others he demands money. I say hell no. Either he can come with us or we go without him, it is not until we begin to leave that he comes to his senses.

With hat over we head to the slums, and that is what they are. Garbage in the streets, haggard children looking for any scraps of useful things to wear or eat, the stench of the sewer. I could find many useful items for my experiments here. I must come back at a later time. Anyway we arrive at our destination the Honey Pot. A bar/brothel that is only marginally cleaner than the street it is on. As we make our way to the door the ladies call out, Lo Kway ask’s where we can find a man in a top hat, they reply that must be Jacob, he’s the owner of this fine pace.

We head into the bar and begin asking around. It seems Jacob is in the back room at a high stakes gambling game. Lo Kway and I enter the game. As we sit down I notice that something strange is in the air. Some sort of enchantment. I’m guessing that it is just to help Jacob take more money in from his patrons. Not quite as I was about to find out.

While playing cards we speak with Jacob, a few rounds pass and I think I have a very good hand. But Lo Kway is becoming more drunk and slightly glowing. Something is defiantly wrong. We need to leave. As I get up to help Lo Kway the girls in the room try to touch me, I have just witnessed what happens if you get touched, you fall into some sort of sleep/trance. Using my teachings from the Book. I order the one trying to touch me to intervene between me and the other girls. A few tense moments later I feel the touch as I am about to exit the back room. Luckily my Ortega blood is enough for me to shrug off the very intoxicating feeling and Lo Kway and I are able to make it into the main bar area.

I yell for Dan and the wagon driver it’s time for us to leave. That causes the bar to erupt into motion. All the girls touch patrons causing the stupor. And the bouncer at the door walks in with a 2×4. This is one big man seven foot something and built like a brick house I quickly order him to run. Now normally when I TELL someone to do something the obey. He just looked at me and said I DON’T RUN, and then walks away. I did not notice another man sneaking up on Lo Kway until he tried to stab him. A few well placed bullets later and the smaller man is injured. The big guy is back so I TELL him to remove the smaller one attacking Lo Kway. He obeys. And then heads towards me. I think I might be in trouble. But the rest of he group is able to incapacitate him. Before he goes down he actually throws the 2×4 at Dan. That would have hurt if he was hit full force but he is able to move enough to only be clipped by the board.

Next thing we know a large inky black mass comes out of a door into the middle of he room. This thing is definitely something I don’t want to be around. By this time Lo Kway is outside the bar moving down the street. A few well placed shots and the creature goes down. Once out of the bar we head back to the “safer” parts of the city.

Now what to do with the knowledge of the Honey Pot and her owner Jacob.

Meta-Gaming w/ Chris

The party has just spent about 30 minutes trying to get Chris’ character to join the group. This was despite the discussion that there are only four of us and it being high summer, it is unlikely the group will get much larger.
So there is Chris demanding we give him some money to accompany us on a visit to the Eastern Slums of Malifaux.
How else should Chris act? Now he is complaining that he shouldn’t have entered the building with the old hag back about a month ago, that way he could deny his fate.
Gotta love Chris…

The Swamps of Malifaux

We finally make it to Zoraida’s hut. The hut is in a tree, the gremlins climb up the tree with our offerings. They don’t come back down. But the hut does, the tree splits down the middle allowing he hut to sink to the floor. We are invited in. I notice she is using the items we brought her to make dolls. There are dolls of all major players in city, and she is making dolls of us. The part of me that revels in my Books knowledge is impressed, and a little scared. I know what can be done with a doll like this. Oh well too late to worry about it now. Lo Kway begins asking her questions. She answers in exchange for a task to be completed in the future. That’s bad, never make a deal unless you know all the terms first.

We find out the the malifaux gods “tyrants” are trying to return and that is bad for everyone. It seems the book that mister Ming has is tied to there original binding and that the neverborne that escaped the mine we were at is the king who created the book. Not good at all.

The trip back out of the swamp is mostly uneventful. Once past the gremlin village we camp for the night. During he night someone sneaks up on our camp. I TELL the lead person to shoot yhe person behind him. He yells bang? Must pay more attention to what the person is wearing. Anyways after a few moments we realize that this is the famous Ortega clan. I have a small amount of Ortega blood in me, a distant cousin on my mothers side. We are invited to stay the night at their compound. All agree except Bill. The wagon driver decides it would be easier to ride in a wagon and takes Bills.

Once at the compound we say our thanks and pleasantries to the matron of the Ortega clan then head to bed. After a big breakfast we head out towards the city.

As we make our way towards the city we see multiple wagon caravans heading out of he city. After questioning one we find out hat they are miners reopening the mine that we were at.

Once back in the city I return Bills wagon, pay for my storage fees and rent another room. It seems we have been gone three months although for us it was a little over a week. Strange, time flows different in the swamp.

Anyway I go looking for puppet making materials, and some ready made puppets for me to begin my experiments on. I find a Mr. Odis Gaines in the guild enclave who sells puppets and is willing to teach me how to make them. I begin my training with excitement.
